One concern with education today is that
many elementary social studies programs provide only a
superficial look at the subjects of history and geography. Our
students use the Pearson Learning and Core Knowledge History and
Geography Books, which provide a very rich foundation for grades
K-4. This program
provides a foundation of information every student needs to
know. Our Kindergarteners learn about Early American
Explorers, the continents, Native Americans and the Mount
Rushmore Presidents. First graders study Mesopotamia,
Ancient Egypt, Early Civilizations of the Americas and much
more. Second graders delve into Ancient India, Ancient
Greece, Japan, Immigration
and Civil Rights. The interesting topics continue from
there! It’s a great program that allows students to learn
their history and develop geographic awareness through
spectacular visuals that build map-reading and globe skills.
Third graders study Michigan History. In fourth grade students
investigate regions of the United States.

Third Graders explore a photo
quilt of the Lewis and Clark trail. Beginning in grade
5 we incorporate Glencoe’s middle school series which provides a
thorough overview of both Eastern and Western hemispheres. Grade
8 studies American History utilizing laptop computers in a
completely technology based program.
Each year we hold a
Living History Night. Each student in grades 2nd, 4th, 6th, and
8th grade portray a person from History. They dressed as the
person, gave a 3- 5 minute speech. The 2nd and 4th grade
students also create a threefold board
with information about their person. The sixth and eighth grade
students create a
PowerPoint presentation about their person. Kindergarten, 1st,
3rd, 5th and 7th grade do class history projects which are
displayed on Living History Night.
